Three Primary Stages of Chiropractic Care:

Stage Treatment
Step 1: Pain Alleviation This process involves creating treatments and adjustments that allow the body to reduce pain and discomfort. Ultimately we want you to feel better as a patient.

Treatments dujring this step will be more frequent and involve 2-3 sessions per week with reduction in session after a 6 week period. The goal is to provide pain relief and reduce inflammation, joint pain, so that the patient can enjoy a regular day and week.
Step 2: Corrective Adjustment The chiropracter will look to relieve pain, but more importantly prevent any future outbreaks of the pain area. During the Corrective adjusmtent phase, the patient's flexibility is restored and soft tissues are improved, thereby helping prevent injury.

The area of pain or joint will be treated and structural areas will be cautiously addressed. Long-term approach is the key during this step. The patient will experience a drop in the level of pain. Exercises on the patient's time will be undertaken and provide extreme benefit to the patient.
Step 3 - Maintenance During this phase periodic chiropratic care is scheduled. The DC might recommend more or less frequent checkups depending on the nature of the condition.

The focus of this step is in creating tangible long-term value for the patient. Usually you can expect an appointment every 6 to 12 months at this point. Dr. Hovel will ensure our care schedule fits in with your lifestyle and goals.

Chiropractic Adjustment

Chiropractic adjustment, or chiropractic manipulation, manual manipulation, or spinal manipulation, is a common therapeutic treatment for lower back pain. Chiropractic adjustment involves muscoloskeletal disorders and the neurological system. The purpose is to balance the joint and soft tissue movement and bring about relief from muscle pain, spasms associated with scar tissue, poor mobility or repetitive movement.

The objective of this chiropractic treatment is to reduce the subluxation, with the goals of increasing range of motion, reducing nerve irritability and improving function. Chiropractic care utilizes subluxation with the focus on achieving stronger range of motion, reduce nerve impingment and improving blood flow. Dr. Hovel is trained in many techniques including mobilization chiropractic therapy, and soft tissue treatment which are custom made for each patient’s unique muscle structure.

ART Technique - Active Release Technique (ART)

ART is a state of the art soft tissue technique which treats conditions with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. ART is a patented massage techniques that involves learning 500 treatmetn moves or "protocols" which must be mastered to treat the muscle tension. Each ART session is unique to the patient since you must familiarize yourself with the patient's soft tissues (bones, muscles, tendons, fibers) and the muscles right next to those areas.

ART uses a contact tension and slide movement to treat the muscle, the premise focuses on shortening the muscle to acheive maximum impact. ART is used to treat NFL players, NBA players, IRONMAN Athletes and sports where repitition takes place.

How do overuse conditions occur?

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways: Lack of oxygen (hypoxia), Acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc), Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma) These factors cause scar tissue and leads to muscles not being able to move freely. Muscles become shorter stretched and cause nerves, tendons to become trapped. This reduces the range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

Corrective Exercises

Dr. Hovel trains each patient in exervise that are custom tailored to their body and their particular issue. Some patients have poor running form, others sit in chairs with lower posture, or other patients use machines for hours without using a stress relieving exercises. We teach exercises that can be performed at your home to improve spinal position, strength building, muscle adjustments and balancing your health.

Nutritional Counseling

Dr. Hovel provides suggestions for healthly eating foods that have been shown to reduce inflammation and provide optimal healing times. We see vitamins and minerals as essential, but knowing the right combination and usage is critical for improvement times.
